Some University of West Georgia students may feel like there’s not much to do in Carrollton, leaving them searching for something to do to occupy their time. For students that enjoy reading, here’s one possible solution: join a book club! Carrollton’s Neva Lomason Memorial Library, located on the corner of Rome and Spring Street just off the square, is the perfect place to strike up a discussion about your favorite novel.
Librarian Laurie Eubanks expressed excitement at the idea of UWG students starting a book club at the library.
“We’d be open for [college students] to have their meetings here,” Eubanks said. She added that she and the other librarians would be happy to help students start the club and would also lend their expertise by giving pointers along the way.
If starting a book club sounds like too much work, there is always the option of joining one of the library’s established clubs. Currently, the library has three book clubs that meet regularly. Two of the clubs, the Thursday Evening Book Club and the Carrollton Lunchtime Mystery Book Club, are open to adults and usually draw anywhere from 6 to 12 people each month. The third club is the Carrollton Teen Book Club which is geared to teens ages 11-18.
Eubanks explained that most of their book club members are females. However, depending on the book for that month, sometimes males do show up to take part in the discussion. Books are usually voted on by the club and agreed upon as a whole. Sometimes, though, members suggest titles that are of particular interest to them.
