With your busy schedule of work, school, and significant others, it can be difficult to keep up with school deadlines. However, spring semester almost here and there is one thing standing in the way between you and your 12:01a.m. registration day in November- advisement.

Advising is a crucial part of the registration process and without it, you cannot register. With that being said, the following article provides you with several tips to help you through the advising process whether you are a freshman or a senior.

First, before you sit down and make your list of classes, take the time to get your hands on an Undergraduate Catalog. This book not only tells you the ins and outs of every major here at UWG, but it also provides a detailed summary of each class offered.

Having this will help you decide what classes you want by giving you the ability to research each one.

Next, after you have read the class offerings for either core classes or your major, make a list of the ones that you want or need to take the following semester. It is okay if you have more than five on your list, it will get narrowed down when you see available class times and days.

Then, head to the UWG website to look at the class bulletin for the following semester. From the UWG homepage, click the Current Students tab, and then click Class Bulletin.

Chose the appropriate semester. From there, you will see a list of all the different subjects offered at UWG. Click on the subject link that you need and begin your search.

Look for classes that you both need and want. Write down all the appropriate information regarding the class including course name, CRN #, time, days, etc. Do this for all of the classes on your list.

After you have made your list of potential classes, it is time to narrow it down to about four or five, depending on how many you plan on taking.

First find the classes that you need the most, it is important to get them on the top of your list because they might not be offered the following semester. Once you have finished all of your necessary classes, move on to the ones that you want or have interest in. Be sure that the classes you add after the mandatory ones don’t have a time conflict. Continue to do this until you have cut down your list to the desired amount of classes.

Now that the dirty work is done, it is time to get advised. First you will need to find out who your advisor is. If you are not sure, then you need to visit with a faculty member in your major department to find out. If you are undecided about your major, then you can be advised by the EXCEL Center located on campus. You can visit their link via the UWG website. For more information you can also see the Advising webpage on the www.uwg.edu/advising/.

Finally, make an appointment with your advisor. During that time you and your advisor will go over the schedule that you made and they will make suggestions if necessary. Then, they will lift your hold so that you will be able to register on the assigned day.

Remember, if you do not get advised, your hold will not be lifted and you will not be able to register.

Overall, advising is not that bad. You get to sit down with your advisor and talk about your future and the see when you will be able to graduate. Feel free to visit the EXCEL Center and they will point you in the right direction. They can be reached at 678-839-6280 or in room 200 of the UCC.
