The University of West Georgia’s Mass Communications program is hosting their 29th annual Media Day on March 10. Students interested in a career in television, radio broadcasting, journalism, or public relations should attend the event to gain insight and meet others in their field of interest.

Media Day is an event that gives students the opportunity to interact with alumni and professionals in the media. It allows students the chance to network and also recognizes the achievements of students in the department of mass communications.

This year’s keynote speaker is Susan Hale, a UWG alumna who currently works for Fulton County Schools as a communications manager. Hale will be honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Other influential panelists include Daniel Bell, Barbara Gauthier, Jacob Hawkins, J. J. Jobe, Matt Murphy, and Jenn Woolcock. Each individual is an expert in a specialized field, including production, on-air talent, public relations, and journalism.

Media professionals from the Atlanta area will also attend Media Day. Participating companies include Star 94, Project 9-6-1, Zoo Atlanta, Turner Broadcasting, the Times Georgian, and Southwire, among others. Professionals will share career experiences with students and will offer career advice.

Southwire Company Corporate Communication will be honored with the Distinguished Service award for services to the program, UWG, and the community.

Media Day begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom. A panel discussion will begin from 9-10:30 a.m. where the expert panelists are available for students’ questions. The discussion will be followed by an hour-long networking session that gives students a chance to interact one-on-one with the media professionals.

The Honors Luncheon begins at 12 p.m. During the luncheon, Hale will give her presentation and student achievements will be recognized. Awards include excellence in convergence journalism, multimedia storytelling, and public relations. Certificates in professional development will be awarded to students who have completed or participated in internships or a media practicum.

Media Day will come to a close with an alumni social at The Lazy Donkey in Carrollton at 2 p.m.
