The 15 Minutes Or Later Myth

How many students have heard that there is a written rule where you are allowed to leave your class if your professor shows up 15 minutes late or later?  Well, this is just one of the many myths that have been spreading throughout the West Georgia campus.  Now, it is time to find out if these are myths or truths.

The first myth to address is, whether it is a rule that allows students to leave their classrooms without consequences if the professor shows up15 minutes late or later to class.

In research there was no documentation found that supports this myth, so I asked Dr Beheruz N. Sethna, the dean of our school himself.

Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna states, “The professor is in charge of the class, and so has the opportunity to set the rules. Of course, if students wish to appeal any rule that they believe is unreasonable, they have the right to appeal to the Department Chair.  If the faculty member is 15 minutes late to class every day or very often, that needs to be brought to the Chair's attention.”

Myth #2:  If a school transportation vehicle hits a student, their school tuition is free.  Also, if a vehicle around a traffic light hits a student pedestrian, their tuition is free.??????

Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna states, “We hope that this never happens.  However, the University does not have the authority to waive tuition.”

Dr. Sandra Stone from Academic Affairs states, “If a student was hit by school transportation we would probably cover medical fees but not tuition.  These are urban legions or should I say campus legions.”

Myth#3: If your professor dies during the semester, you, the student will receive an A in the class, which the deceased professor taught.

Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna states, “We hope that this never happens. However, if it does, the Department Chair will assign a new instructor to complete the course. That person,
working with the Chair and/or other faculty, will design and announce a grading system that makes the best of the difficult situation.”

Myth#4: If your roommate dies, you will receive A’s in all your classes.

Assistant Director of Residents life Dawn Palmer states, “This is a rumor and is not true. I have worked at four other campuses and this same rumor has come up and has not been true at any of the other campus.”

Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna ends by saying, “Incidentally, there are other myths about certain events leading to an automatic "A" -- these are not true either -- the only way to make that a high-probability event is by working hard and doing very well on each element of the course.

All the myths listed above have proven to be false, and are common among other college campuses.  If you have any other myths that you have heard and want cleared up send them to www.thewestgeorgian.com.
