The University of West Georgia’s Campus Recreation Department is known for intramural sports – but most people aren’t aware that they offer nature trips all year round as well. The department holds between one and two trips a month for students.

Trip costs vary between $10 to $50, and if students don’t have their own equipment, rentals are available at UWG for free. Group size is also kept small, capped at about 12 students per trip. Many different varieties of outings are planned including hiking, rafting, camping, canoeing and rock climbing.

Coordinator of Outdoor Recreation Tara Mostowy takes requests for trips. Confirmed trips, however, don’t appear on the calendar for almost a year because it is created at the beginning of each fall semester.

“My goal is to get people off [of] their couches,” said Mostowy.

She has a background in biology, so during many outings, students can learn about the wilderness surrounding them. Students also have volunteer and wilderness stewardship opportunities available.

This year is the second time the Recreation Department is having an alternative spring break trip, consisting of camping and hiking in many different places.

The department is going on two different trips this year, one to Cumberland Island. The other outing planned is to the Great Smokey National Forest. During both trips, students will enjoy the scenery will doing trail maintenance.
