The West Georgia Wolves competed this past week in Men’s Golf, Volleyball, Football, Cross Country and Soccer, offering up a strong effort and taking key wins.
The Men’s Golf team went to the University of North Alabama Blackberry trail to compete in the tournament there, finishing in fifth place at 5-under par. Junior Zach Lassetter and sophomore Jack Wall made a strong effort, shaving 12 strokes off their day one score of 297.
Lassetter did a two-under 70 on Tuesday following his earlier performance in the tourney, grabbing a 74 to achieve his first top-10 win this fall. The second-highest finisher of the tournament was junior Daniel Guthrie, who shot a par 72 on the first day and a 73 on the second day, taking 12th place with 1-over.
Wall, for his part, shot a 78 on the first day and a 70 on the second day, tying him up at 19th place with several opponents, as well as fellow UWG sophomore Bryn Powers. The final finisher for UWG was senior Ryan Chitwood, who took 28th place, shooting a day one 77, and closing out the tourney with a par on the second day.
This marks the team’s last tournament for the fall, until they head to the Southeast at Kinderlou, hosted by Valdosta State on March 13 of next year.
The Wolves Volleyball team took on Montevallo in their second “Think Pink” event this month, falling 3-0. The Wolves stayed tight to Montevallo’s heels for the first 22 points of the first set, until a UWG service error marked the end of the run, with Montevallo breaking away to take the win 25-19.
In the next set, UWG took an early 7-3 lead, but the UWG offense was stopped there, with Montevallo taking over, consistently outscoring the Wolves 22-6 over the next 28 points to win 25-13. In the final set, Montevallo seized an early 5-1 lead and continued on to finish 25-13.
The Men and Women’s Cross-Country team swept the Oglethorpe Invitational on Saturday, with both teams taking first place. On the men’s side, Freshman Robert Fensterer took his second straight meet victory, following last week, where he became the first UWG runner to win a meet since 2007.
Including Fensterer, the Wolves put up a total of four runners in the top ten. Senior Shawn Matthews took second place right behind Fensterer, junior runner Dan Moffit took fifth place, and freshman Jake Hudson took eighth place. Junior Brian Liburd finished in 11th place to grab one of his best finishes at West Georgia.
On the women’s side, the team put up three top ten finishers. Junior runner Megan Jacobs led the pack in third place, followed by freshman Briana Crawford in fourth, and sophomore Lindsey Ebert in fifth. Marisa Matthews finished in 11th place, followed by Nicole Mellili in 14th place and sophomore Chelsea Little holding up the rear of the pack in 17th.
The Oglethorpe Invitational was the last regular season meet of the season for the Wolves, with the Gulf South Conference Championships next weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Wolves Football team took on Arkansas Tech in Russellville, Arkansas on Saturday, falling 62-30 in a game that saw 989 yards of total offense, with junior quarterback Sean Gray and his offense putting up 180 of those yards in the first half. The Arkansas Tech offense put up a fight of its own, putting up 342 yards in the same time frame.
In the second half, UWG sophomore backup quarterback Brandon Behenna took a bite out of the ATU lead, moving the chains down the field to score twice. About Behenna, Coach Dickey said, “Brandon did a great job of helping us force the issue in the second half.”
One of the plays during the second scoring drive for Behenna included kicker Adi Brkic handling a rough punt snap and converting it into a first down run.
Before the game, Arkansas Tech Athletic Director and football Head Coach Steve Mullins stated, “They have an ability to run the ball.” About Brkic in particular Mullins stated, “[UWG has] an excellent kicking game.” He continued, “I consider Brkic the best combination kicker in the league.”
The Wolves Soccer team tied the Harding Bison on Sunday, 2-2. Junior Melanie Kilburn took the first goal of the game in the 33rd minute off a pass from senior midfielder Jenna Greathouse to break through the Harding defense. The game remained at 1-0 until halftime.
Harding managed to score after the half, with a shot from their midfielder. Five minutes later, the Wolves answered back with a 25-yard blast from Greathouse off a free kick that bounced off the bar and in to take the lead.
The lead stood for another nine minutes of play before Harding tied things up in the 78th minute. The teams continued to clash until the end of regulation play, sending things into overtime and then double overtime, with no resolution.
This game marks the Wolves first tie of the season. They are now 3-9-1 for the year and 1-2-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Their next match is at Lambuth on Thursday, followed by a match here at West Georgia on Sunday against West Florida.
