Joining a student organization is a great way to get involved at the University of West Georgia and meet other students with similar interests. The Center for Student Involvement recently hosted Student Organizational Week on Jan. 25 through 29 outside the Campus Center Ballroom.

“Every semester we do something different for the student organizations,” said Crystal Brown, coordinator of the student involvement programs. “Usually we have a whole day, but this time we decided to make a student organizational week.”

The organizations were divided among the days of the week. Monday was the Departmental, Educational and Social Greek day; Tuesday was Honorary and Professional Organization day; Wednesday was Special Interest and Political Organization day; Thursday was Religious, Student Government Association and International Organization day; and Friday was Recreational, Service and Social day.

UWG has 134 different student organizations geared towards a wide variety of student interests, from community service to entertainment programs.

One type of entertainment program is the newly found Phatal Atraktion Dance Crew. The dance group was founded by UWG junior Stefan Riley.

“We like to keep the crowd entertained with different themes,” said Riley.

The dance crew recently performed a step show depicting ‘nerdy’ students trying to win the affection of the opposite sex through dancing. The dance crew has even done a Michael Jackson tribute.

“We have a lot of fun coming up with different themes to incorporate into dancing,” said Qwanesha Bryant, junior.

The department and educational organizations such as the Geosciences Club, Sports Management Society, Mass Communications Society, Sociology Club and the Art Student Union offer students career tips and other opportunities within their major. Students of all majors are welcome to attend any type of department and educational organization.

Service organizations offer students the chance to help the community through hands-on projects and fundraisers.

Alpha Phi Omega is one of the many service organizations offered at UWG. The co-ed fraternity helps donate money to nonprofit organizations such as Relay for Life, the AIDS Walk, and the Boys & Girls Club.

“We incorporate the same principles as the Boy Scouts,” said junior Lenard Smith. “We stand for leadership, friendship and service to the community as well as to the campus.”

Junior Emily Suma added that they “help [with] community projects, such as the soup kitchen and the animal shelter.”

The international and cultural organizations such as the African Student Association, Lambda and Latino Cultural Society honor and help to educate the campus about different cultures and races.

Students interested in simply organizing events can find a social organization to join, such as the Student Activities Council.

“SAC helps plan social events for all students to help balance class work with leisure time,” said SAC president Shavonda Sewell.

The SAC plans events such as Homecoming, Spring Fling, concerts, comedy presentations, multicultural events and more.
