The University of West Georgia Wolves took on the University of West Florida Argonauts in men’s and women’s basketball on Saturday, coming out with a win from the Men at 100-94 and a hard-fought loss on the women’s side with 56-49.

The women’s team started the night off at 5:30 with Whitley Mayberry putting up a commanding court presence, leading the team with 25 points and 6 rebounds.  Thomassian Wyatt also dealt out some damage of her own, doing 11 points and 2 steals.  Despite the tremendous effort on the court, the Wolves fell 56-49 after the Lady Argos from UWF made major pushes in the 2nd period to widen the scoring gap between them.

Craig Roden, head coach of the UWG Women’s Basketball team, said, “West Florida has one of the more experienced teams in the East returning this year and it shows.”

“We’ve had a tumultuous season and we have seen some bumps and bruises, but we are still fighting,” he continued.

On the men’s side, John Pringle pulled out an amazing double-double, scoring 34 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, leading the team to their 100-94 Overtime victory.  Jeremy Smith came up with 16 points of his own, followed by Deion Sims with 14.

The 82-82 tie at the end of regulation play was the setting for the tense 5:00 shootout that turned the game into a true barnburner with UWG taking home its first East Division victory.
